Crosstown Crescent Bag Fabric and Notions

Fabric Recommendations

For the outer fabric, you can choose nearly any woven, non-stretch fabric. Here are some ideas and tips:

  • Bottomweight fabrics like cotton twill, light canvas, light denim, or corduroy work beautifully. Avoid extremely thick fabrics like heavy denim or canvas unless you have a heavy-duty machine as they can make it challenging to sew through thick layers, especially when attaching the straps.
  • For a sportier look, try a technical fabric like ripstop nylon.
  • Lighter fabrics like quilting cotton can be used but will result in a slouchier bag. If you prefer a more structured bag, add interfacing to the outer fabric for added shape.
  • Quilted fabrics are another great option. You can quilt your outer fabric to a layer of batting, then treat the quilted panel as your main fabric and follow the instructions as normal.
  • Many makers have also had success using leather or vinyl for the outer fabric but be sure to consider the capabilities of your sewing machine, as it needs to be strong enough to sew through thick layers. If using leather or vinyl, consider constructing the bag with a turn-through lining (instructions not included) instead of using bias-bound internal seams.

For the lining, lightweight, non-stretch fabrics like quilting cotton are ideal.

Fabric Requirements

All fabric requirements are provided with the assumption that fabric is cut flat, not folded, to help minimize waste. If you prefer to cut your fabric doubled, or if you are using a directional fabric or print like stripes or corduroy, you may need to use additional fabric.

Notions

Zippers

  • You can use any kind of zipper you like (molded plastic, metal, nylon)
  • If your zipper is longer than required, you can trim it to the required length
  • If you have a zipper that is slightly too short, you can increase the length of the zipper tabs (for the main zipper) or adjust the width of the zipper opening rectangle (for the interior pocket zipper)
Small Size Medium Size
Main zipper 28 cm (11”) 36 cm (14”)
Interior pocket zipper 16 cm (6”) 20 cm (8”)

Bias Tape

  • Small size: 130 cm (52")
  • Medium size: 160 cm (63")
  • You can either use store bought double fold bias tape (6-10mm (1/4-3/8”) wide when double folded) or make your own by cutting ~3 cm (1.25”) strips of your lining fabric and joining the ends together.
  • If making your own, your can cut your binding tape in any direction for this pattern to save fabric (it does not have to be on the bias).

Webbing for the strap

  • 120 cm (48”) long, 38-40 mm (1.5”) wide
  • Instructions included for how to modify the pattern to work with a different strap width.

Tri-glide slide adjuster

  • Metal or plastic, 38-40 mm (1.5”) wide

Interfacing or stabilizer (Optional)

  • The bag is designed to be slouchy and turns out well without any interfacing however if you prefer, you can interface the side and bottom panels to give your bag more structure.
