Paperback Tote Fabric and Notions
Fabric Recommendations
For the outer fabric, you can choose nearly any woven, non-stretch fabric. Bottomweight fabrics like cotton twill, light canvas, light denim, or corduroy work beautifully. Avoid extremely thick fabrics, like heavy denim or canvas, as they may make it challenging to sew through thick layers, especially around the strap loops, unless you have a heavy-duty machine.
For the lining, lightweight, non-stretch fabrics like quilting cotton are ideal.
Fabric Requirements
All fabric requirements are provided with the assumption that fabric is cut flatfabric flat, not folded, to help minimize waste. If you prefer to cut your fabric doubled, or if you are using a directional fabric or print like stripes or corduroy, you may need to use additional fabric.

Notions
Thread to match the outer fabric and lining
- You can use topstitching weight thread on the outside of the bag if you prefer but it is not required.
20 cm / 8” zipper for inside pocket
- You can also use a zipper that is longer than 20 cm (8”) and simply trim it to the correct length.
(Optional) 2 plastic or magnetic snaps (including the correct tools to install them)
- 1 snap for the bag opening.
- 1 snap for the front pocket: you can split the front pocket in two with a line of stitching or leave it as a single large pocket and add an optional snap closure (which will not be visible from the outside of the bag).
(Optional) 2 D-rings, 20 mm (3/4”)
- If you prefer you can add D-rings to the strap loops. This will help the straps slide better, but is not required.
